Governor Eno Urges Strong Safety Culture in Akwa Ibom

Calls for Increased Awareness, Institutional Leadership on Safety Practices

Uyo, Akwa Ibom State — Umo Eno has called on citizens to adopt and maintain a robust safety culture in all aspects of their daily engagements as a proactive measure to reduce accidents, injuries, and loss of lives and property.

The governor made the appeal during the opening ceremony of a four-day training programme for Safety Officers and Lawyers in the State Civil Service, held at the Ibom-LED Centre along IBB Avenue in Uyo.

Speaking at the event, Eno stressed that safety is all-encompassing and vital for improved living and efficient service delivery. He noted that safety consciousness must be applied across workplaces, including Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as in homes, schools, hotels, and construction sites.

He charged the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Health, Safety and Environment, Jayne Ufot, to intensify awareness campaigns across institutions and organizations in the state. The governor also commended her commitment to advancing the workability of the state’s safety directorate.

Governor Eno further directed Commissioners, Special Advisers, and other public officials to lead safety campaigns within their respective MDAs, positioning them as key drivers of the initiative.

Reiterating his message, the governor urged all residents to embrace safety as a way of life to prevent avoidable accidents and societal losses.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Head of the State Civil Service, Elsie Peters, lauded the governor for prioritizing the safety and welfare of citizens. She highlighted the establishment of the Department of Occupational Safety as a pioneering initiative, noting that it is the first of its kind in the state.

The training programme is expected to enhance capacity and promote best practices in safety management across the civil service.
