Iran came from behind on two occasions to secure a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Los Angeles.
New Zealand struck first through Elijah Just in the seventh minute, but Iran responded with an equaliser from Ramin Rezaeian before the break. Just restored New Zealand’s lead early in the second half, only for Mohammad Mohebi to head home the equaliser in the 64th minute.
The match was played against a backdrop of political tension and logistical challenges for the Iranian team, which has been based in Mexico due to visa restrictions affecting several staff members. Iran’s coach, Amir Ghalenoei, later criticised the travel disruptions facing his side during the tournament.
The result leaves all four teams in Group G level on one point after Belgium and Egypt also played out a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture.
