Israel’s cabinet is expected to approve a long-anticipated ceasefire deal with Hamas in Gaza, as high-level government meetings conclude and final decisions near.
The breakthrough could see the release of Israeli hostages as early as Monday or Tuesday, according to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who made the statement during a public appearance. While Trump did not specify the source of his information, his comments align with growing international anticipation of a ceasefire agreement.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar confirmed that the ceasefire would take effect immediately following cabinet approval. “Once the deal is authorized by the cabinet, the ceasefire will begin,” Saar said in a brief statement to reporters.
The Israeli government has yet to release full details of the agreement, but it is expected to involve a phased truce and the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and other concessions.
International mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, have reportedly played a central role in facilitating the agreement after months of hostilities that have left thousands dead and widespread destruction in Gaza.
A formal announcement is expected once the Israeli cabinet votes on the deal.
