Priest Urges Parents to Prioritise Holistic Education at SCOSSI Sports Festival

A Catholic priest and educationist, Reverend Father Emem Umoren, has advised parents of secondary school-age children to seek institutions that provide integral formation rather than focusing solely on classroom instruction.

Father Umoren, who is the Principal of St. Columbanus Secondary School, Ikwen, made the call while addressing participants at the school’s 2026 Festival of Sports and Games held at its premises in Ikwen. He spoke against the backdrop of what he described as generational challenges confronting young people, emphasising the need for holistic child development encompassing academics, character and co-curricular engagement.

The event, described by organisers as well planned and executed, featured students of the institution, popularly known as SCOSSI, showcasing their skills and enthusiasm across a range of sporting activities. The school noted that the festival underscored its commitment to all-round excellence, with students demonstrating strength not only in academics but also in sports and character formation.

Beyond track and field events, the festival included cycling and traditional wrestling, which drew considerable attention from spectators. Organisers said the event provided a platform for students and visiting participants to display their talents while reinforcing what they termed the “SCOSSI charm”.

The celebration was chaired by Ntiedo Usoroh and attended by the Proprietor and Bishop of Ikot Ekpene Diocese, Most Reverend Camillus Umoh, who was represented by the Vicar General, Very Reverend Professor Anselm Etokakpan, alongside patrons, parents and alumni.

Father Umoren used the occasion to invite parents and guardians to consider enrolling their children at the school for the 2026/2027 academic session, stating that registration is ongoing through the school’s website. He announced that the entrance examination will be held at the school premises on Saturday, 7 March 2026, and urged parents to complete registration ahead of the examination date.

He reiterated the school’s commitment to providing a tested and trusted platform for comprehensive child formation.
